My sister had the Mariah Carey Christmas album. I would play the whole album, but I really liked “All I Want for Christmas”. That song was on repeat. Literally just on #3. I listened to it from about 1999 to 2005 every night. I kid you not. When I say every night – I mean I don’t care if it’s Christmas… it was playing in summer, it was playing in fall, it was playing in spring. That was my jam!

The song was really good. Musically it was good. Her range… great! I think that’s the only song where she actually did a lot of… I’ll say a vocal rollercoaster. She was up, she was down – such vocal skill! When I listened to it I would try to do the things she was doing vocally, but it was too high. You needed a proper warm-up just to start the song. I couldn’t master her vocal. However, I became okay with that ’cause not everybody has the whistle tone. I can’t get up there and I’m fine being right where I am.
I admire her vocal though. From a very young age, I’ve had somewhat of a musical ear. My sister sings and both of my parents sing. Although we don’t play any instruments there’s always been music there. I could always make out when something sounded good and when something sounded bad. I had an appreciation for any technical musical things.
The song is also just a feel-good song. Last week Monday, I was feeling kind of blah. So, I told my google assistant to play Christmas music and that song came on. I don’t know if it’s just the jingling of the bells, but your spirit actually lifts. You’re not as down and out.
When you think of Christmas and Christmas songs… you think of snow, you think of family time, you think of hot cocoa. I also think of “The Sound of Music”, “Oliver Twist”, “Annie” and those sorts of shows that come on TV. Christmas is a really heavy family time… I cherish it. When there is fresh snow it is bright and pretty… During the Christmas season, everyone is also polite, well-mannered, and well-behaved. I like that. I wish it was like this year-round.
I wish it was like this year-round.
That’s why I listen to the song so much. I experience good cozy feelings whenever it is played.
