Cadence & Candour post

When I listen to most of Kirk Franklin’s songs I feel like I’m finding myself. The songs are telling you the truth. Really and truly with everything that’s going on, the world needs God. I may not go to church every Sunday or every Saturday but I believe that there is a higher power. So, if I’m having a bad day, this is where I go.

I can’t even tell you which song is better. Both “My World Needs You” and “Pray for Me” are great. They lift me up and make me feel good. Even when I’m working out, these songs do something for me that a regular fast track can’t do. It’s a combination of the words and music that just speaks to you. A lot of people may say they don’t believe but everybody believes in something. It doesn’t matter what or how, everybody believes in something.

Sometimes I’m walking and I’m listening to him with my hands up. I’m just opening up myself to ingest whatever it is that I’m supposed to have.

So if I’m having a bad day, for me definitely when I’m pissed off with my husband, this is where I go. It calms me down and tells me what I need to do to fix myself.

One of his songs “Wanna Be Happy?” says you have to make the change. You can’t allow somebody else to make the change for you. I think a lot of people rely on somebody else to fix them but you can’t rely on somebody else to fix you. You have to make sure that you’re happy before you can help somebody else. You have to walk in your own direction, not somebody else’s direction.

As I’ve gotten older I’ve learned to be selfish; I have to make sure I’m okay. If you don’t look after yourself, you’re not gonna survive. It’s hard to make sure of that…  but you have to become selfish. I no longer wait for friends or my husband to do things, I just do the things that bring me joy.

I no longer wait for friends or my husband to do things, I just do the things that bring me joy.

It’s not that I’m self-centred, I just have to make sure I look after myself because if I don’t, nobody else will. In being selfish you’re actually helping everything else – all the other areas of your life and your relationships will only be better.

Kirk Franklin’s music gives me these kinds of messages. It gives me a different perspective on situations I’m going through and leaves me feeling uplifted.
